Not sure whether you want a simple monogram or something more elaborate? Monogramming is our most requested option — a set of monogrammed initials, usually one to three letters, stitched in a classic font and thread color of your choice. It's quick to approve, timeless, and works beautifully as a finishing touch on almost anything we make, from a leather passport case to a canvas weekender.

A fuller embroidery design opens things up further. Beyond monogrammed initials, you can add a name, a date, a short phrase, or original artwork, stitched in as many thread colors as the design calls for. Many customers start with a monogram and later add more detailed stitching elsewhere on the same piece, or the reverse — a fully stitched design with a small monogram tucked into a corner or lining.

Whichever direction you choose, every monogram is stitched right here in our Lafayette workshop, and we're happy to walk you through monogramming styles, thread colors, and placement before you commit to a design.

Have a question about embroidery or monogramming? Here are some of the most common ones we hear. If yours isn't answered here, drop us a note on our contacts page and we will respond, usually the same day.

Can you embroider or monogram directly onto leather?

Yes — for oil-tanned and chrome-tanned leather, embroidery and monogramming can be stitched directly into the material, the same way we'd personalize canvas. The leather is smooth and flexible enough at thinner weights that certain needles pass through cleanly without cracking or distorting the surface. With that said, we like to offer alternatives. Although you "CAN", do you really want to? We want you to be certain about this from the start. We like to monogram on canvas or some other textile where the needle travels between the weave. With leather, a solid material, many small holes are punched through the leather. These perforations weaken the leather and the longevity will be shortened. This may not be an issue for infrequently used items when the monogram is not dense and is placed in a low stress area where abrasion is not a concern. Contact us and we will be glad to discuss a few really good alternatives that give you that bespoke piece!

What if I don't want stitching directly in the leather — are there alternatives?

Yes, there are a few alternatives to stitching on handmade leather goods. On veg-tan leather, we typically recommend hand-tooling or stamping letters instead of stitching — it presses the initials into the leather rather than sewing through it, and holds up better over time. Plus, with veg tanned leather, the patina or aged look it develops over time is gorgeous! On leathers other than veg tan, we can custom embroider a canvas or other fabric piece then attach that to the leather. This provides two benefits:

When the monogram ages over time, it can be replaced.
We like to attach embroidery or monogramming, first to a leather frame. Then the frame to the base piece. The frame, in itself, adds another custom design opportunity.
Using an alternative method allows the personalization to sit on a fabric piece instead of directly on the hide.

Can I get monogramming or custom embroidery added to leather I already own?

Sometimes, yes. You can send us photos of your leather piece and we can evaluate the best option. We prefer clear front, side, and inside photos, concentrating on the area where you would like the stitching placed. Stitching an assembled piece can depend on factors such as accessibility, lining present, type of leather, etc. The alternatives discussed above may be options as well. Whatever the case, we will be glad to take a look and give you our opinion!

Does embroidery or monogramming weaken the leather?

If stitched directly on the leather, yes, it weakens the leather due to the number of perforations. But this doesn't mean that it should not be done. In low stress areas on smaller leather pieces that bear no real weight or load, it can be fine. Think of monogramming on the back side of a luggage tag. That's likely fine. But on a bag that will be stuffed full of who-knows-what and sat on to zip, it likely isn't the best idea. Stitching does, itself, provide some stability or reinforcement to the area. If the area is not under stress it can hold up. Thicker, veg-tan leathers are exactly the type of handcrafted leather gear where we'd steer you toward tooling instead of stitched monogramming. One final thought: if you intend for the leather piece to be passed along or if the piece is used regularly and exposed to abrasion, the leather will most definitely outlast the monogramming without substantially weakening the leather. Custom embroidery and monogramming are stitching — a lot of stitching that typically sits proud or above the surface. Even on older, solid handmade leather pieces like saddles, the exposed stitching in high wear areas deteriorates before the leather if proper leather care has been a priority. Having handcrafted leather gear personalized with a monogram that can be replaced is a great alternative!
